Inclusive Employment
- Focus on the ability not the disability.
- Do not discriminate against people with a disability.
- Make sure your health and safety policy and Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs) are accessible and are designed to include people with disabilities.
- Make sure your company handbook is accessible and considers people with disabilities.
- Mind your language – choose your words carefully so that you don’t offend anyone.
- Mind your body language – for example, talk to the person directly – not the interpreter.
- Do not pet a harnessed dog – the dog is working.
- Do not raise your voice when speaking with someone with a hearing impairment.
- Be willing and proactive about providing suitable accommodations.
- Be aware that excusing a person with a disability from an activity could be seen as exclusion. For example, saying something like “Don’t worry about attending that meeting as I know it’s hard for you to get there” might cause offence.
- Provide disability awareness training to all employees.
- Carry out a web access audit to make sure your online presence is accessible and user-friendly.
